Earlier, a press conference for Bonnie’s latest project The Philosophers was held.
Hollywood has come to Jakarta with the filming of psychological thriller “The Philosophers” set to begin on Saturday.
At a news conference in Senayan, South Jakarta, on Friday, film producer George Zakk said he believed “The Philosophers,” to be set in an international school in Jakarta, was the first time Hollywood had shot a movie on location in Indonesia’s capital.

This isn’t looking like its going to become a terrific movie, I ‘m afraid. I wonder if it makes it to cinema screens at all.
What do you mean, Martha? I think the plot sounds really interesting, myself. It’s an indie movie and they held a press conference for it. They don’t do that for every movie at the *start* of shooting. They’ve said in many articles that they plan to release it worldwide.
Just to let Martha know the press conference was for Indonesia since they’re keeping the shooting of the film and the locations for it on the down low.
^ Yeah, exactly. This press conference was held simply for the local Indonesia press. To make them aware of the shooting but also to let them know they wouldn’t be revealing shooting locations to the press.
This wasn’t a worldwide press conference. That comes later.
I think it’s way too early to judge a film by the PRESS CONFERENCE for the local media. That’s like judging a book based on the typeface. No, it’s like judging a book based on the font the writer chose when writing the book. They haven’t even filmed anything yet.
I’m quite excited for the film. Besides Bonnie, it does sound like an interesting film:
“A brilliant philosophy teacher at an international school in Jakarta manipulates his class of graduating seniors toward academic excellence through the use of mind games, emotional blackmail, and psychological assaults, stretching their brains right up to the breaking point.”
Do you know the film Oxford Murders? Was produced a couple of years ago, and has some scientific/psychological plot which is quite interesting. Despite starring actors like Elijah Wood (yes, most famous of all Hobbits) and John Hurt (yes, our famous wandmaker in reel life), the film went straight to DVD. Even though it is a good and interesting movie. And Philosophers may be well-done and well acted and interesting – without big US stars the film will not be successful on the US market. Bonnie is now a celeb in the UK, that’s for sure, but I doubt she is much of star in the US. Not enough to give the film a big push for the US market. Nevertheless, I am curious to see the movie. And maybe I’ll be proven wrong and the film will be a success, one can never now…
Why location Jakarta? This seems somewhat random. Or are the producers aiming primarily for the Indonesian/Asian market? If the movie is to be successful in the US, location Jakarta makes no sense to me. And judging from the plot and cast, location Jakarta makes no sense to me either. Most of the actors are from Western cultural background, I think.
No one is expecting it to be a blockbuster type success. But you said it didn’t look like it’d be a terrific movie. I don’t think you can really judge it yet. I doubt even Bonnie herself is expecting this to be some huge major success. But I bet she is expecting to learn from it, learn what it’s like on a non-HP film set, and better herself overall. Many actors have small, unknown indie films.
Plus it’s an indie film. Those tend to be film festivals/select cities. It’s not going to be a big budget film where it’ll be everywhere and expected to make huge money.
So I still don’t get your point.
harti: it’s set in Indonesia because it’s based around an international school. The cast is from all over: UK, US, Australia, Turkey, Iran, etc.. The school it’s based on is a real international school in Jakarta. Also, from the sound of things, they plan to do a lot of location shooting around Indonesia, like in temples and around volcanoes.
I think they chose Jakarta because the beaches and mountains in London and New York City are non-existent.
What’s wrong with shooting in Indonesia?!?! Eat Pray Love a Juliet Roberts film was shot there.
It’s the place the director/script writer wanted it to take place and hence why they’re shooting there. MAN, what is up with you guys.
OH! I’M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS FILM!
I found it pretty interesting! I think the location is really enchanting! Indonesia is such a great and different place to film it!
Can’t wait to see Bonnie in another level of her career!
LOVE YOU BONNIE!
Just 17 days to go! |It all ends…7.15
I don’t mean to say there was anything wrong shooting the movie in Indonesia. Just wondering if there is any particular reason behind. There should be, and I couldn’t figure what it is. All the plusses for Indonesia that people have listed would apply to other locations as well. Except perhaps for the landscape and so on. I wonder how this might enter as an important element for a psychological thriller. Perhaps it is the visual compensation for action scenes. Or should remind viewers of the Avatar scenery.
The school it’s based on is a real international school located in Indonesia, so that’s probably why they chose the location. It’s an original script and the movie itself takes place there. Filming it there makes it as authentic as possible.
THE FILM TAKES PLACE IN INDONESIA HENCE BEING SHOT THAT WHAT IS THERE TO GET?!?!? O_O
*hence being shot there. What is there to get?* Typos in my last comment. lol
whatever the outcome is, I still wanna see this on big screen. It’s too early to tell whether it’s a big success or not, but I agree with Rosie there.
